saginawian, ,xdanthemanx and one other guy (forgive me for forgetting your name) hit a 1800's era area this morning. Saginawian hit the only silver (2 quarters and a war nickel) and I got this Crotal Bell. My camera is a piece of poop so the pictures are not the greatest. The bell is intact and has NO above the split and a 4 (I'm assuming it means Number 4)below the split in the bell. Now I have no idea about these things so I was hoping one of you could enlighten me. I has a flower looking pattern that encircles the bell and that's about all I can tell you. Again I apologize for the crappy pictures.

Jerry

Yeah Jerry it is fully intact and rings real nice once I got the dirt out if it. Sure would like to know how old it is though.

CW era or a little earlier.  I'd say 1830-60 is a pretty good date range for bells of that type.

Thats a great find. Crotal bell...I believe means "closed bell"
They were used singularly( around an animals neck), or lashed to a strap or harness in varying numbers and sizes ...."Jingle bells"....Joe

Thanks for the schooling folks! I can't believe the age based on the shape of the bell! I'm pretty stoked right now... Great site Ohio Jerry, learned a lot from it. Buckleboy, you amaze me with your vast knowledge on just about everything old. I enjoy your posts and insight.

That is pretty funny. That had me laughing.

Actually your interpretation of the exchange is incorrect and "homo"-centric.

that sounds painfull :icon_scratch:

Jerry--I think your oldest bell is the third one from the left.

Any of 'em have a maker's stamp on them in addition to the number?
