Today's finds were two buttons, 11 cents in clad and this interesting bird band.
Of course its my first bird band and of course it would be one of those bands that will keep me up at night wondering if i will ever decipher the code.

Does anyone have any info on how old this may be and what kind of bird may have been attached to it? i can slip it over my pinky finger up to the first knuckle, so i assume its was on a fairly large bird.

The band says...N.J. - U.S.
8-2 with the capitol letter A next to the 2
Official

It also has 5 numbers after the Capitol A

I hope for your sake it is a bird band, since its the first one you have found. On the other hand, I have to agree with Trapper Art. They were not usually attached with rivets like yours seems to be. The ones I have found, are a solid piece. The letter - number combination does not seem right either, thats why the website you were given does not accept it. It should also say something about a Dept. of Conservation, and they usually have a phone number right on the band so you can call it in. Again, I hope I'm wrong. I'm just speaking from experience from the bands I have found.

I agree with you as well. I may have to put the band back on my bucket list. All the rivet bands i am finding are not like this one.
That said, this thread may have to be moved to the what is it area.

I recovered a 1918 racing pigeon band.
I contacted the American Racing Pigeon Association and they told me that my band was from before their association was formed. I believe that your band is from a wild fowl like a they use on geese or ducks. I would look in that direction.
