I got into the hobby back in around 2014 and would search through all my work tills and things to see if there was ever a quarter I could swap out if it was silver, or check change I would get, go to banks and ask them if they had rolls ect. I only did it for a few boxes worth of coins and it was really entertaining and exciting to find a silver quarter or half dollar.

My question is since people have been doing this for so long and some people order multiple boxes a day how is it that there is still silver in these rolls. I get specific dates and error coins are probably still easily found but when people dump boxes worth of coins don't those coins end up being circulated more than some box from 10 years ago thats in some bank vault?

I'm planning on picking up some rolls tomorrow to have a look and see if I can get lucky. Just thought I'd ask if anyone still has luck with smaller dollar amounts like a case week.

EDIT: Also how does one go into like a local store and ask them for the half dollars in a coin counting machine. I have a few local stores that have them but I am not sure how to go about asking or if that is even a possibility to purchase half dollar or dollar coins from them.

Kevin,

I can only speak for myself.
I get a box of halves each week from my local bank. They are supplied to the bank by Loomis.
2022 seems different than the past few years in a couple of ways
silver, in general, is down from previous years
40% silver, which used to show up with half-decent regularity, is way down (in fact, I've found more 90% than 40% in 2022)
Unlike several other regular posters to this forum, I have had virtually no luck getting halves (silver or otherwise) from tellers -- maybe one or two at a time, but never rolls (except for the occasional dump).
The banks I use will not sell me bags from the coin machine, so that road is blocked.
However, I only use one bank to obtain the box and a different one to dump -- again, unlike several other CRHers who utilize multiple banks.

I would agree with blueberra, silver is down pretty drastically from years past. Unlike him, I had a two-month 90% drought and was only finding 40s in ones and twos per every few boxes. Last week I hunted two boxes, the first had 1-40, the second had 3-40s and 2-90s. But the previous 4 boxes were skunks.

None of the banks that I use have counting machines available to even ask. As for stores that have coin machines, which is what I think you were asking about, all of them around me are Coinstars, and I don't think the store has access to them, but I could be wrong. Machines are just nothing I saw as being an option for me.

Bottom line, I think for most of us the thrill is in the hunt and silver is just a bonus. I view each roll as a present that I get to open, some times I get something good and sometimes (most times) I get coal. You just need to decide if the time invested is worth it to you.
