I think it would be bad to sell now since silver is down so much. CRHing pays less than minimum wage with every denomination except halves, and even with halves too, often. You can even lose money if you get skunked and/or shorted, since gas, vehicle repair, CoinLok bags, etc. are real expenses. This is not even to mention your time. You would be better off getting a crappy job, from a financial perspective.

Only if your financial situation does not depend on the income. It's too unpredictable. It it were easy, or reliable, all of us would quit our jobs to do it.

I don't think CRH as a job would work. Between all of the labor and expenses you would have to be really lucky in the finds department to make CRH profitable enough to call it a job. There are much easier ways to make money on the side.

I would not. It's a hobby with rewards, definitely not a job. The only people I know who could do that would be retirees with pensions/etc. They have steady income and free time.

You can not subsitute CRHing as a source of full or part time income. It is a hobby for us to get silver and other collectible coins at a price that is a little bit under spot/going value, and sometimes after your expenses you will end up paying more for your silver through CRHing than you would if you would have just bought the stuff. Just wait for your first 50+ box skunk streak of nothing but garbage useless clad, and all of the effort involved in getting rid of it and you'll see what I mean. I would recommend buying and selling on craigslist and/or eBay if you want to generate some extra income.

But on the other hand, look at Timzim. Yes, he spends a lot of time and ties up a lot of money doing it, but it's not like he's spending any money other than for gas, which he'd probably spend doing something else anyway, like playing golf, for instance. I'm sure we've all run the numbers on his little operation, and making $20k-$30k per year (pre-silver market "adjustment", that is) is nothing to sneeze at. I guess my point is that if you enjoy CRH as a hobby anyway, why not up your volume and make what money you can.:coins:

There are a lot of other worldly expenses involved than just gas and time. It's simply not doable no matter how you look at it (:

I break it down this way.

If I find 10 1964 half dollar coins, it's an amazing day, Agreed? Well, my amazing day of CRHing can easily take 4 hours. Plus Gas, and the fact that it's my Freaking Day off. I don't get days off very often.

I find it's just a better use of my time to go BUY a coulple Oz, and just get on my with life.

Go hiking, kayaking, yard work, Anymost anything else, and I feel more constructive.

10 1964 halfs is not my average "good day".

my average good day is more like 4 40%ers. or less than 1 troy oz.

If I could scoer 20 or 30 OZT a day, then DUH, I would be CRHing for a living. But it Obviously isn't that good.

Well I agree that timzim makes the most profit if he sold his finds. But I did read an article from like 2010 where a guy tried to make a living off of copper pennies. He partnered up with a company and they started to melt them which is illegal. Long story short they lost like over $50,000 and I was surprised they didn't get sent to prison. I don't believe its possible unless you live almost free of expenses andhave a large bankroll.

My point is only that everything has "worldly expenses" attached to it in either time or cash or both, and if you're going to be CRHing anyway for fun, then there is a way to make some money. Not talking mortgage money, but even a few hundred a month can ease the pressure on the family budget.

If you are casual, you are not pulling in 'several hundred' a month... Sorry to be a cynic!

Nothing cynical in that, but don't you think if you averaged one box of halves a day for a month, you'd have a couple hundred buck's worth of Ag?

It's so hit and miss, and in the long run the answer is no. I've been doing this since 2010 and am talking from experience.

Fair enough, 'streetwalker, but from my own perspective, I'd just as soon make whatever I could doing something I enjoy--especially if I were going to do it for fun anyway--than drop everything for a job I'd rather not do. 8-)

All very reasonable and good responses- my view point on it is this: it's a hobby I really enjoy and just started and haven't really had a real big skunk streak- I feel if I were to try and do it as a pt job it would take all the fun out of it as I'd be so consumed with trying to find as much as possible to make the $$$- plus like others have stated I'm sure the has would add up considerably, even though I have noticed a jump in my gas bill the last couple weeks but not enough to deter me or off set the price of what I've found so far-
I was looking to see if still being fairly new if my view was off from what others thought and overall it's not-
Thanks for all the responses
Here's to an awesome week for us all

Part of the problem is that over time you start to see a decrease in the amount of silver your boxes produce (usually - on average). At least that's what I've noticed. I used to find a lot of 10+ silver boxes & haven't seen one in a while. My per box average used to be about 3/box, but is now barely over 1. TimZim would tell you his #s are down over last year. Eventually your own dumps will catch up to you. A lot of the silver we find is replenished by ignorant people, but I believe that a good chunk of it is good ole virgin silver, since halves don't circulate like other coins.

If you keep a spreadsheet with all your stats (and add in expenses) you'll find it's not really feasible for most people. But I agree w/ what most have said - it's a hell of a hobby that can pay a little (unlike golf, etc) and have a blast at the same time. And the thrill of an occasional big score washes away the tears from the long skunk streaks!

HH all.

The only way I think CRHing could be a viable part time job is if you have a Ryedale Penny Sorter as well as people in your area buying the Copper Pennies for a decent price. If it were really a job, I would have quit mine a long time ago and spend all my time in Salt Lake County running from bank to bank. It's just something I do after work multiple times a week that sometimes brings Silver but more often than not skunks me.
