it kinda looks like an SS officers hat insignia. that would be a cool find if thats what it is.

Well, I do OK with military stuff ::)... but on closer inspection the number of teeth and fastening devices don't seem quite right (it may be a reproduction?) Research could pay off if you know its old. Any background of where it came from? UPDATED 2/15: I just realized that on the link I posted earlier you can also click to see the back of the device, showing what the correct fasteners should look like.

I think nhbenz's second post is right. I believe it is a reproduction. Couple of differences are as nhbenz mentioned "the fasteners are different" and the original one's are marked on the back.

Either way that was a pretty neat find in that cigar box.

Good Luck and HH

Actually the deaths head badge predates the SS. The deaths head was previously worn by certain Hussar units in the Imperial German army.

I'm agraid that I agree with the concensus - post war reproduction. Of all the fasteners I've seen for genuine WWII German badges I haven't seen the bend over prongs used like that. I'm guessing that the metal is fairly soft too.

But its not all bad - after all its still a 'find' and an interesting discussion piece.

;D ;D ;D I think you did great in the find !!! And not knowing what it is I would have put it on a hat, for my grandson! :D ;D I think its kinda cute as a pirates sign!

So when did the bend over prongs start being made? Anyone know?

at first i did not beleive it to be waffen ss,or any other ss for that matter, but while checking GERMAN MILITARY COLLECTIBLES price guide(by Ron Manion)on page.120 upper left(discription on previous page)is a prussian hussar officer visor cap that pictures(small image)a very similar multi-bone crossbones, and said hat was custom made.so maybe it is an ss iten.none the less very cool!!!
