A stove flue damper handle? :icon_scratch:

Looks like a homemade gadget. Couldn't be rotating; no round element on the extention. Looks like exertion has been placed on the knob; it appears to be snapped/broken. How could you turn a knob with such an extention on it? A churn would make more sense.

A flue damper handle wouldn't need to crank, it need only rotate 90 degrees.
The porcelain knob may be to prevent burning your fingers when adjusting.

Does the knob spin or did it spin at one time?

Hand crank music box, phonograph, sewing machine, clock, bell, adding machine, cash register? :dontknow:

Yes the knob does turn, which is puzzeling as noodle pointed out the "shaft" is rectangular, not round.

I did think part of a stove as AU24K, but why brass / copper. and gold plated.

Perhaps a cash register as you mention, or other that does not go round and round.

Someone will know for sure. Maybe I'll go and see if I can find more of it.

The shaft does not have to be round. Actually, if it was round, it would not work. I see no reason to believe it cannot be a crank.

Agreed, you can clearly see the pivot point. Green check

Agreed, but don't have much of a pitching arm.

Thanks Creskol,
I had one similar on my 1848 home and this home has the bell with just the turn knob without the crank.
so pretty cool find, Bill

I used to, but with knees getting bad I don't plan to risk my elbows. So I guess it's more like a weak underhand toss into the woods.

My knees are bad, too, but I can't imagine how hard it would be to walk on your hands when you have bad elbows!

Then I guess you don't realize how much of a hardcore detector guy I really am. :headbang:

Sure we can .. My guess would be that it is the crank off of one of these:
