Hey guys! Got my account a while ago and decided to make a post! I found this antique hand lamp on Craigslist for $5.00! It was called a Cape Cod Pewter and Brass Oil lamp. I drove over there and picked it up. The bottom is all genuine. But unfortunate, the top was new :( it has this little seal going across it that says Cape Cod( I'm guessing that's the brand) hand lamp. And beneath that on the seal, it says," circa 1860". Is that when the company was made. Also, on the inside-ish part, it says eagle. Here's a couple pictures. I was wondering if you guys can tell me anything about it. ( how old it is, what it's worth?) Thanks for reading!

I cannot answer the questions you ask, but just wanted to say welcome and that is a nice looking piece. We of the hurricane tribe down here in Fl ALWAYS have a few of those handy...in case the generator goes out after the power did

Welcome to the forums. Just wanted to say very nice find! It could be worth quite a bit of :3coins:

I don't know anything about lamps so take this with a grain of salt. The tag on this bothers me, particularly the part that says Circa 1860. To me that implys one of two things. 1) It's a reproduction of a lamp type produced circa 1860. 2) The item is a real antique & the tag was attached as part of a display. If it's a repop it's probably not valuable.....& a display tag wouldn't have been permanently attached to a valuable item.

its a type of lantern they commonly called "hurricane" lamps -- the ciirca 1860 markings means - "-Made in the style of a 1860 era model" - thus sadly it is NOT an original model but one made one later using the earlier 1860 type style design pattern --thus its a reproduction --however it is sill well worth the $5 you paid and most likely a bit more. -- but its not the "high dollar" true antique you thought it was.

circa = means time frame or era circulated / used in (used in the time frame / era of ) -- in this case it means -- lamp of the type used in the 1860's time frame *something that would have been used in say civil war camps = or homes , a amodern civil war reenatcor needing a historically era "correct" lamp for his camp tent site would use just such a lamp.

I think it's vintage though... It does have rust on parts of it... Unfortunately, I must say you guys are more knowledgeable, and its a reproduction. Thanks for looking! I think I will just keep it and light it up some time just for fun. But I can't seem to find the spot to put the oil in. Oh well. Happy hunting' :)

the top (wick part) should unscrew from the fuel holding base part ==note it be be a display type piece not meant for actual use --if it is usible be sure to use latern fuel in it only
