Cowboys & Indians Battle site to hunt.

I came across a lot A LOT of broken pottery the other day while hiking on a county park in a very remote area that has just been opened to mtn. biking and hiking.
About 50yards from where I started finding the pottery, following the Wash trail of pottery up in the brush I found a circal of rocks stacked up about 3ft high that had a perimeter of about 100 to 150ft. and 10 yards away on 2 sides there are 2 half circles of rocks also stacked up. A lot of the rocks have fallen over the years but it's mostly still there and untouched.
I found 1 spear point in the circal and the broken glass bottles have blow marks on the bottom that appear to be blow marks from 1850s era at least.
Sounds like I know where I'll be hunting Monday.
What do y'all think of this hunting spot ?
The park people told me hunting in the park was OK and there was no rule against it. ;D ;D ;D

I'll let y'all know what I find. And I hope nitro won't go fishing that day and be ready to do some MDing.

I am sooo jealous! Sounds like you found an old Indian campsite complete with fire pits. I wouldn't expect to find a whole lot with the MD but there's bound to be points, trade beads, and other interesting items. Sounds like you're gonna go into Archie phase. Be sure to check around the firepits and outlying areas just outside the campsite especially near the water source. Also be careful that you don't disturb the area so much that the park officials don't go from ;D to >:( or you'll be :'( all the way home. Remember that the stuff you find will be pretty small for the most part so make sure that you carry some extra film canisters with cotton balls to protect your finds. @&#$, Red. I wish I was already retired or I'd be down there in a heartbeat. HH and keep us posted.

Hey Stoney.
I don't think this is an Indian camp.
The pottery is white man stuff with lots of glass, square nails wagon parts, some parts I don't know what are,and even a knife handle, and thats just from picking up things off the surface.
It's along a high river bank that looks like there might have been a wagon trail.
I don't know but I'm going to find out.

? ? ? ? ? Where's this at...uh....exactly? ? Kiddin. ? Sounds like at the very least you'll come away with some great relics. ?Good luck ? ?HH

Re: Cowboys & Indians Battle site to hunt.

I have my fingers crossed that duering the battle a few coins might have fallen out of some pockets, or maybe something
"GOLD COINS and Silver all wrapped up in an oil rag and sealed with a thick wax coating" ;D :HAHA.
got buried real fast.
Well if it wasn't for wishful thinking and the willingness to check it out we'd never find anything.
Every day I go out hunting I tell myself "Today I'll find that gold coin"

I say the same thing. Only it's about me. Don't want to sound selfish but....hey! I'm sure you'll find that gold coin. Good luck on your site. HH

Re: Cowboys & Indians Battle site to hunt.

I grew up in E.Texas. My dad would hire this old guy to plow our field every year for our garden with a mule and plow. We would find arrow heads and pottery following the plow. We found relics all the time out there.

Bulletboy
I'm surprised I didn't find more arrowheads at the site, but the whole area along the river is loaded with workings so I might come up with some good points also...
I'm hoping for a double eagle though. :o
I'm taking my MD buddy nitro with me ,I just gotta remember to take the batteries out of his MD ;D so he don't find it before me. ;D
Oh darn he will see this and be onto my plan now. :-

Re: Cowboys & Indians Battle site to hunt.

Red, back when I was a kid my dad used to talk about some of the old folks that had buried their money and valuables in mason jars. I wish I could remember the the names but that was 36 yrs. ago.
One of my friends and I would take our 22s out hunting and found several old homesites in the woods. Sometimes they are just about buried under blackberry bushes but you could find the fences and fruit trees planted in rows. Lots of old foot trails thru the woods too. We even got run off by a Hillbilly family when they sent their dogs after us.
Back there was still pretty backwoods and wild in the 60s. ;D
