I was able to get out to some local park sites recently. Some old cellar holes off paths, other a good trek into the woods. The park woods around here are now loaded with visitors, so much for escaping into the woods. Also, 3 of the 4 sites had recent metal detecting activity, looks like some other local detectorists have discovered my sites, oh well, I wish them luck. Also 2 of them now have geo caches...

Here is the handful of goodies, the piece on the left is the head of an old hairpin I believe.

I think this is a Pittsburgh and Mckees Rocks RR button, not sure what the CRY stands for.

Hereโ€™s the rest of the brass.

Good luck out there!

Try Pittsburgh, McKeesport & Connellsville Railway. There was also a Pittsburgh, McKeesport & Greensburg Railway Co. if its actually a G. Nice finds.

RY stands for rail yard. It is listed in Volume 2 of Transportation Uniform Buttons as a transit button.

Awesome relic hunt, congrats! :occasion14:

Nice finds, especially the RR button. Those small railroads there moved a lot of ore and metals freight. The Union Railroad owned by USS only had about 6 miles of track between the mills in 1951 set all-time high of 74,440,776 net tons of revenue freight handled. The largest concentration of freight in the world!

Congratulations on some good finds. I noticed what looks like 2 coal mine chits located beside the harmonica reed in your โ€œthe rest of the brassโ€ picture. They seem to be popping up a lot lately.

Stay safe and keep swingin.

Nice finds. I like the buttons. Surprised to see the shank still on the small one. Iโ€™ve found similar ones but the shank is usually gone.

Nice finds Thad. Railroad stuff is always fun to find and research. Looks like you got some good help from the T-net crew on this one.

While many -- but not all -- of the streetcar businesses were owned and operated by the railroads, the transit system isn't considered a railroad. Generally speaking, when RY appears on a button, 9 out of 10 times it will be transit related.

Nice hunt PA. I need a nickle like that. Ive had the same problems in the park woods. So MANY people hiking around. More than I've ever seen. But haven't seen any others detecting. Stay safe.
