Based off your finds, I'd say the area was unhunted before......nice work

Happy Hunting,

Dugholes

nice pick-ups! I would never have hunted there...but eh, that's just me...I dunno much...but sure have fun diggin'!

I guess there could be a ring there, a couple gets married in front of the justice of the peace & then gets in a fight right away & tosses the ring out in the court yard!

Yeah I think I am the onlyone hunting it. There is still a section that I want to get to cause of all the carnivals the Police station has there every year. I get TONS of zinc hits. Just tired of diggin up corroded pennies. :-\

How old is the courthouse there? If unhunted it surprises me that you havnt come up with any silver. Keep hunting though, just cause you havent found it where you have been hunting dont mean theres not any there. GL

Hey good finds at lease you got some gas money to go somewhere else....Matt

The court house is not that old ,i'd say 30 to 40 yrs old. I'm just guessing. I am gonna hit it with the DFX next. I have been using my IDX , I AM GOING DEEPER. Wish me luck.

First let me say Great Finds

Second I am speechless. If I tried that here I would be in the courthouse pending trial :D

I would be interested in how you either got permission, dressed up like a city worker looking for a broken gas main or are you related to the Mayor?

Anyhow looks like a great hunt.

I agree. I would LOVE to hunt the courthouse in our town. It was built in 1840(?) and there are pictures of people taken there in top hats with horses and buggies in the local post office.

Ok guys, let me know why it seems to be taboo for hunting the courthouse. Maybe it is because the police station is right next o the courthouse. I asked a maintenance man if i could hunt, he said go ahead. I know some of the police by walking the courtyard w/my boys. They have seen me detecting as well. They probably figuer ,heck this guy is a local and looks familar. lived here now for 5 yrs now. Let me know is it against the law and are police letting me get away with it.

No its not taboo and I suppose the legalities would depend on the location

And you had permission, I just know that it won't fly here.

Downtown is off limits, tried it once and police responded like you would not believe

maybe it was a slow day for them but I doubt it.

Keep hunting, Great Finds

Pemission??? Isn't it local government owned??? Paid for and maintained by taxes???
The only thing I'd research is if it is a registered historical site (THAT matters.....doesn't it??)

Otherwise.....what CAN they tell you?!?

3 years ago they remodeled our courthouse (Est 1845) lawn. They pulled all the grass up and laid new sod after the make over. I don't know what all the guy found that was hunting it but he was there every day while it was bare dirt (I didn't own a detector yet). I just heard rumors that he found several silver coins. I think they would frown highly on it if someone went in there now and started digging holes in their new turf.
It isn't illegal to hunt it but you draw a lot of attention from some of the more (supposedly) upstanding citizenry. They think it is their civic duty to stop anyone from doing anything. And I mean anything! It's a shame but unfortunately it happens. Legally I could go to the store and buy a 6 pack of beer and sit on a public bench in the courthouse yard and drink it. But if I did that I am sure that within 15 minutes the police would get a phone call from someone whose opinion or influence is of much greater importance then mine and I would be asked to go elsewhere to drink my beer. Which of course I would because even though what I was doing was hurting absolutely no one, I would then be a target for future scrutiny. Every time I was seen in a park or public venue detecting or enjoying any other hobby they would stop to see if they could hassle me in some way because they would remember me causing trouble at the courthouse. At the moment I have a pretty good rapport with the local law enforcement and I definitely want it to stay that way.
The fact that you hunt there and it doesn't upset anyone is great, I wish it were the same everywhere else. Until someone tells you otherwise you should enjoy it and not worry about it.

Firearms are a different story - I am an ardent 2A supporter and am an active Open Carry citizen. I have no problem walking around the courthouse or police station OC'ing a firearm.

.......Yet life is a game of give-and-takes. I'll be concealed when I MD cuz the LAST thing I wanna do is cause anxiety in the person I'm attempting to get permission from!
