Folks,
My son and I both hunt and we share thoughts about our recoveries. This week we both pulled a couple of finds that have us stumped. Tom, my son, suggested posting them and getting the collected thoughts of the experts here on the forum, so without further delay ...

Tom was walking the Potomac up near Shepherdstown, WV, when he spotted the rectangular object. At first he thought it was a buckle frame, but I have some doubts. It appears to be thin metal, maybe stamped but could be lightly cast. It is rusty, not like a brass frame in my opinion. It has some holes in the corners where it could have been tacked into a box, case, or chest. My guess would be something from a piece of luggage, but perhaps one of you have seen one and can help with a solid identification and estimate of the period. I see no markings, we haven't cleaned it.

The second "what is it" is a brass or copper object that I dug while getting some time on my new detector. I did soak and clean it. It seems to be some sort of staff-holding device. It has remains of wood up inside the object and has brass or copper tacks coming in from each side that originally held the wooden staff in place. I recovered it in an old yard (construction from the 1940s or so) one of a group of houses that are being sold and cleared out for new construction. The location was in Alexandria County VA. Recovery was with permission.

Any ideas?

Best wishes,
Steve

Broken knee,
Thanks for the identification! Cool.
Agreed that Tom's looks like a frame for just the purpose you describe.
Best wishes to you!
