county regiser& recorder for old maps?

I am going to my couny courthouse next week. I am planning to go to the regiser & recorders office to see some of the old maps and possibly get copies of them. My question is, is this a good place to see what the area looked like 100-150 years ago? also, can I look for structures that were ther but do no show up on any maps I find online?

That's one place. Another is your county historical society-they love to talk about local history! Another is your state historical society-usually located near your state capital. Too look in your local library, it usually has some old maps to look at and sometimes they sell off old books to make room for new literature. Can find some real treasures there if you look close.
