How do you figure its a large cent?

Bradyboy...by the head, which is a draped bust type LC (1796-1807) and the reverse is a large cent reverse where it clearly says One Cent.

If this follows the same trend as the UK then this is my thoughts;

In the late 19th century, the very worn 1806/07 halfpennies (in your case a LC) were countermarked (which differs from a counterstamped coin which is an offical marking to reflect a change of use/denomination etc..) with local shop & product advertisements which was unoffical (Law breaking). Research what your name refers to?

Yours is a countermarked coin with advertisement.

Crusader..Thanks for that!! I have heard both those terms before but always thought they meant the same thing and now know what the difference is between them,, :thumbsup:

Crusader, very interesting on the time frame, here are two Countermarked Large Cents my son found, and they too are Draped Bust Large Cents, one dated 1801, the other one date is worn off.

Interesting. I googled BERTSO and got 389,000 hits. Try asking the Wilver group. I forget his name. Kirk i think. They find coppas all the time and may have some as well.

Not listed in Brunk's book on countermarks.

Wonder if BERTSO might actually be an incomplete strike of BERTSCH? If so, there are LEO. BERTSCH countermarks, and it might be related to those.

By the way, Rich Hartzog has an outstanding countermarks list (multiple pages) at:
