Hello everybody,
I hope this is the right place to post this.I have a coin to share/inquire about as to value and origin.
I traded a 1907H large Canadian cent AU with a low mintage(800,000),and some cash for it.

I have here a half-cent from 1828 with an A and an eagle on the obverse and an H on the reverse.
The eagle has good detail.I can see feathers with my loupe.

This would probably be a $100 coin if it weren`t for the countermark.Does this add or detract from
value?Does anyone know where it might be from?

any help is gratefully accepted,
Paleo10kbc

P.S. The 1907H was a treasure find, itself.Paid $2 for it in a dealers junk box.I know it was worth more than that!

I am not sure "who" the counter marks come from. I dont know if there is a way to identify ???

How many stars on the front of the coin? 12 or 13 The 13 being common the 12 being rare.

I am hoping for 12 !!

Thanx for sharing, VPR

13,I`m sorry to say.I did notice the lower mintage and rarity of the 12 star variety.

I`m sure there will be one in that cache I`m going to find soon!Along with a couple of
Draped bust half dollars and a chain cent or two!If you find it before I get there,I`ll tell
you where to send them!HA HA!

thanks for the reply

Merchant and Privately Countermarked Coins (2003) by Gregory G. Brunk lists this countermark as follows:

A & Eagle
Eagle A
Rev.: H

This mark has previously been seen on six other 1828 half cents, and on two British coppers.

The Countermarked Coins Price Guide (2003) by Rich Hartzog values coins bearing this countermark at $12.50 - 20.00.

Thanks mackydon and PBK,
The value is a little disappointing, but I think it`s still priceless as a piece of American history.
Now that I know they are relatively inexpensive,I may seek out more countermarked coins.
Thanks again
