I was going thru some stuff today that I dug in the fields, things I didn't throw away and wanted to look at them when I had time. I found this little pewter disk and I thought I saw some design on it, it is exact diameter as a shield nickel....looking closing I can see a 5 on one side, the "D" of united and the "tate" of states....look closely! I put a real shield nickel beside it to compare

other side you can see the shield, and a date of 1867

I never knew people counterfeited shield nickels??? what do you think?

Seems like a lot of work for a nickel. I guess nickels were worth a lot more then than they are now. Probably get a large beer for a nickel. That's a really cool find the would have made my day.

ok I absolutely positively CONFIRMED it is NOT a burnt, beat up or badly abused real shield nickel. I grabbed my etrac ran the real nickel over the coil several times 12-12, 12-11, every pass............now I ran the counterfeit one over the coil over and over and over. EVERY single pass produced a 12-25 signal. This clearly proves it is NOT a real shield nickel. Just not possible.
