Howdy all, just dug this coin today at an old homesite and puzzled. Why is this 1835 Mexican 8R not silver. I'm thinking it's bronze and haven't had much luck finding any others. What's y'all's thgts??

One cool find! Looks as though it may have been siver washed at one time.

Very cool recovery, have you scale to weigh it?

It seems from what I have read that there was a lot of counterfeits in either debased silver from .250 and up in fineness.
There was also copper content that would a bronze alloy which would weigh heavier, brass will be lighter.
It was stated that Monel alloy didn't come into play until 1901
There was brass which were plated with zinc sulphide to give them a silver look also.

Some interesting reading on the weights and different theories of the original/counterfiet dies that were used in minting.

Great info Pep!!!!! It's 20.3 grams which I thgt was odd, also there is no sign of a silver look to it.
