I was walking through a recently plowed field and this caught my eye. The more I held it and looked at it, the more I convinced myself (perhaps foolishly) that it could be some kind of war club. I hope the photos posted are good enough to get some opinions as to whether I am crazy or maybe not?

I appreciate any feedback you give.

Thanks!

Looks like a naturally formed stone to me , not an artifact. If it was a club or axe you would see a well defined groove

Thank you arrow86. I appreciate your opinion. You're probably right.

I agree with arrow--don't see any signs of human manipulation. Keep hunting.

Celts, which were ungrooved axes, were from the Woodland period. Even though no groove, it would have a sharpened end. That's lacking on this piece.

Wow! I'll keep that in mind. I figured it was wishful thinking but as a neewbie to hunting and at a complete loss regarding where to hunt (gonna try streams and lakesides) I guess I look stupid. But thanks for the feedback smokeythecat.

Welcome to the forum!

i can see why you thought that. I still have a similar piece I picked up when I first got started.

The only reason I keep it is because it is pipestone.

CW, welcome to Treasurenet and your dont look stupid, you have listened to knowledgeable member's advice and shown a desire to learn, you can learn a lot here.

Yup ... I have much to learn and a few more items to post. One of them is pretty interesting. I just have to photograph them.

Thanks.... and I agree --- no expiration date on the constitution.

Si vis pacem, para bellum <<>> wish I knew how to say that?.... Thanks for the interpretation.

Looking at metal detectors. I know a decent one isn't cheap. Any recomendations? Im interested in meteorite hunting as well as civil war stuff.

Welcome to the forum.

You’re gonna get a bunch of answers to that question!

I went cheap to begin with because I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy metal detecting and didn’t want to be out much if it just collected dust. I’m so busy with work and family that I knew I wouldn’t have time to learn to properly work and appreciate an expensive fancy machine. The F22 got good reviews and suits my detecting style for now... It was easy to learn to use, hits small targets at a fair depth, but I only get out a dozen or so times/year and I still dig all repeatable targets. PulltabFelix gave some great advice for beginners in another forum here. I’ll see if I can dig it up.

Thank you. I appreciate the fact that you approached it that way. I had one of those Walmart specials years ago and hit all the wire and nails and pull tabs to. So much so that I kind of became discouraged. Heck, that was 20 some years ago. I'll check out that link. I could sure use some good pointers. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I checked out that thread, kantuck. Very helpful and encouraging. I guess my previous run of "no luck" was perfectly normal.

Thanks again.

My sons have a couple of really cheap detectors, but they do find metals. We go out sometimes. I think that our lifetime total is $0.73 in clad coins, one very small silver ring, a few horseshoes, a couple of old window weights, and the usual nails, aluminum tabs, junk, and broke whatnots. Doesn’t matter that we haven’t found pirate treasure here in Cornfield. We have fun and get to spend time together when we go.

If if you give it another try, get a pin pointer, and you should probably listen to the folks who recommended a Garrett carrot. I got a cheap one. It saves so much time that I wish I’d’ve got a good one. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before this one quits on me. It acts funny sometimes and I haven’t used it all that much.

Kindest regards,
Kantuck

73 cents?! ... I have to tell ya, you have me beat. I think I was at 45 cents. Anyway, been watching YouTube reviews and on the advise of a couple of people I'm looking at the Nox 800. It's considerably more than I thought about spending, but, like everything else in this world, well, you know the old saying. So, if and when I buy I guess that will be the one. The pinpointer wasn't even invented yet back in the day (never heard t he term) so, I guess hearing your advise it is clearly worth the investment. Heck, all the vids seem to show them too!

Good hunting to you and your sons!
