I found this today, what do you think?
Same size as a King George III Half Penny

Matron Head large cent? Color and size makes sense.

Thanks for replying, I think it looks a little too thin to be a Matron Head.

to chop off a chunk of a george III halfpenny would take some doing as they tended to be pretty sturdy coins and not thin/brittle. Makes me wonder if your piece is a button or maybe a jetton.

Probably not a button, I see no evidence of a shank. Jetton would be cool, it feeling like a copper potato chip, kind of wrinkled and thin.

After some more soaking I'm seeing parts of a design. There are two tiny parallel lines in one area around a centimeter away from the edge. I'm seeing what looks like more too.

i'd be curious to see scans with more details visible. The whole think, crinkled like a potato chip thing sounds more and more like a 1500s to 1600s brass jetton (for instance, several mid 1500s to mid 1600s Nuremberg jettons have been found in Virginia)

The oldest coin I found was from the 1650's so there is a chance, I will show a photo of the design ASAP.

Details show up horrible in these photos but it seems they are there.

Here is an example of a Jetton that I compared it with

I'm assuming a New England area find? Nuremberg jettons are far more plentiful finds in the vicinity of Jamestown, VA but that they would make it up to 17th century New England would also be logical. Another more exciting possibility for very thin, brittle brass piece (besides jetton or button) would be a Somers Island 'Hog Money' coinage piece--- however, keep in mind those are quite rare. But they are of the early 1600s period and maybe a piece or two sailed up from Bermuda.

Hog money would certainly be an unbelievable find, considering how rare they are and knowing my luck I don't think it is possible :).

Also, The size is wrong :laughing7:
