O.K.....you know I wouldnt do that to ya.
Heres what I do have.
#1....This came up while digging at an old cellar hole(1840s to 1920s).
It is 1-1/2 inches in diameter and seems to be stone...like granite?Any ideas what it could be?Although there is a ring all the way around it, it is solid.

#2....I dug this today at a site in use since 1835.It is 1/2" in diameter (50Cal??)
White as a yogurt covered peanut.Down a good 6".
Is there anything age indicative about round balls?
I took the pic to reflect a small knurl mark on it.

Jopher,I have found quite a few clay (fired) marbles that look like your ball there. Maybe someone made a big one for grins?
About the lead...it looks to me to be a fired ball, with the "knurling" actually impressed by the cloth (linen or canvas maybe) patch. I think I can even see the folds of the patch. I have recovered a few of my fired muzzleloading rifle balls, and they looked like that.

dont know anything about them but yrs ago i read a story of this kid who found some clay balls in a cave by the ocean i think in ca. he carried them around for awhile that day then decided to throw them in the ocean one fell out and broke on the rocks he was standing on and in the middle of the clay ball were small diamonds and rubies.dont know if the story was true or not and the story sats the kid had thrown almost all that he was carrying

Thanks to all for the helpful info. The lead is probably more modern and the granite ball is most likely a marble ...... full of diamonds! ;)....joe

I appreciate a good innuendo as much as the next guy. That being said, how often do you measure your balls with the tape measure? ;D Cant help with the ID either. Sorry.

Some of the old mills used to use ceramic and porcelain "balls" to roll and break down the grain for malting.
then the grain would be shipped to breweries, etc...

My Bam (Great Grandma) had a pile of them in her yard years ago.
