Could it be cob?

Yesterday posted this in the cleaning/preservation forum. So far have soaked the disc in some olive oil and the orange/rusty look has changed to a blackened look, which would be expected from old silver coins (I'm pretty sure it's silver). The orange color may also be due clay soil in NC.

Appears to be several cleaning methods/opinions on what's best and it probably depends on what's being cleaned and which condition it's in.

What's your thoughts based pictures and find location, could it be a cob?

Any recommendation on continued cleaning method?

Most old cobs i see are more black,but it could be i guess ,depending on the soil it was found...Or it could be some kind of token....Post a pic when you get it all clean...

It may be a token. Interesting part is that it's not just iron/metal disc, but actual coin/token. I'll post picture when cleaned.

I think I'll try the salt water/battery charger method.

Yeah that's a pretty good quick method. A few progress picture, but sorry they don't show much due to quality (don't have my better camera handy right now). I'll get it cleaned some more and post better pictures. Based on what I can see I don't think it's a cob. The disc is also rather thin. The cobs I've viewed this forum appear to have some substance.

The fact it's so thin makes me think it could have been a flattened coin on railroad track. I can see some markings on the disc, but not really able to make anything of it. You mentioned possible token. As opposed to Love token this one may very well end up being classified as a Hate token

With that much black crust I doubt it would be silver without being exposed to saltwater or a beach environment.

It rings up +94, +95 on the metal detector?

Could it be something like Pewter? I'm not sure I can relate material to a number since none of my detectors have a meter.

Maybe. I left the detector in the office so I don't have V.D.I. chart handy (listed on the detector box). I normally use a preset programs (or modified) and use the icons and actual sound of the signal. Don't rely too much on V.D.I. number other than whether negative or positive. Looked at the manual on the internet, but can't find the chart. I'll look at it tomorrow as to where pewter should register on the scale. If pewter and silver gives same kind of signal you could be right.

Don't see pewter or tin listed on the chart. I'll ask the question in what is it? Hopefully someone can answer the question.
