Could be my coolest find...help please!

Hello All,
Finally got out to relic hunting at an old homestead in NC. (1900ish) All that is left is an old fireplace and wall along a stream. Found axe heads and hoes and horseshoes but this was the only thing non farm related. Not one coin, and I hammered it for 3 days. Found this item (copper I believe) and I think it could be really neat if cleaned up. (Looking for help with that as well) Has any one seen anything like this? I found a quote by Lord Byron that is very similar.
