Hey all,
I just wanted to post my thoughts on my new coil for the X-terra 705. I did hours of research trying to find information on the Cors coils before buying one, and couldn't find very much info at all. What my research told me was that the Cors and Nel coils are nearly identical and the two companies out of Ukraine are either the same individual, or brothers that are making the same product under different names. My decision to get a new coil came from a trip we were planning to the Florida treasure coast, and I wanted a DD waterproof coil that had a larger search area for combing the vast expanses of beach! I ordered the Cors Strike (same as the Nel Tornado) 12x13 dd coil in 7.5khz freq. I was going to go with the NEL Tornado but the only ones available for the x-terra were coming from Ukraine and I couldn't get it quick enough. With that said I found the Cors available stateside from a well known place in MI. I also ordered a NEL Tornado for my wife's fisher f2 (I couldn't spoil the surprise Christmas present of her new ATpro by not getting her a new coil too). I can tell you that both coils are literally identical, and my Cors even has NEL stamped into the wiring fob at the coil head.
So off to florida we go, went to Vero Beach and detected at several spots along the treasure coast. Setup was easy, just plugged it in and went. My 705 is from 2013 so I don't know if it had the newer programming or not(meant to discourage use of aftermarket coils). I also have the stock concentric 9" and the minelab 6" dd 18.75 coils.
Pros:
Easy to ground balance
Superior Depth ( I was digging strong signals at 12-18" consistently on both wet and dry sand)
Covers a LOT of ground
Target ID seems on par with the other coils, but I didn't do a direct comparison
Fairly easy to pinpoint using the "x" method (almost always had the right hole the first time)
Ground balance tracking seemed to work just fine....would track from 1-2 on some dry all the way up to 70+ on the wet.
Very tight fit on the shaft, allowing it to be used as a stand for the detector.
Came with coil cover
Cons:
Pretty heavy...definitely a workout, but you do get used to it, and I'm sure a harness of some sort would help.
Didn't come with any instructions (not that any were needed)
Recovery speed seemed a bit slower than my other coils....but then again it is HUGE.
In Conclusion:
I really like this coil, and for beach hunting or wide open spaces I don't think it can be beat. I probably won't use it here in Colorado in parks and such where there are a lot of targets or a good bit of digging will be required, but I will use it at the swim holes or in open fields. I know alot of people talk about the minelab not doing well on the beach, but I had pretty good results. On the dry sand I had the sensitivity set about 22-23 and on the wet sand it was about 19-21. As long as you swing smoothly and not too fast or jerky, there was minimal falsing at those levels. I found tons of bottle caps, some rusty metal bits, .33 cents in change and a replica 8 reale that someone lost. I also found a 3" x 3" chunk of iron that looked to be part of a sewer valve cover or sprinkler box cover..... it was 20" deep in wet sand.
I have not used my wife's NEL on her fisher f2 yet as we only brought her new AT pro, which she did well with also. And i have not yet done a comparison against my other coils. I am relatively new to detecting (have had the 705 for 3 years and only used it a few times) but got a lot of stick time at the beach and feel confident in my assessment of the new coil. I will try to remember to update at a later date when I can compare directly to my minelab coils!!
Thanks for reading and I hope this helps someone out!
