Mystery solved - see post at http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,167236.msg1309204.html#msg1309204 below

I found this quarter sized bent and very pitted silver disc at an 1800's ranch house in Northern California. I can't seem to make out any recognizable features on it, but feel certain it was a silver coin at one point in its life. It is approximately the same size as a quarter, but I've never seen a silver quarter of any age end up in this sort of shape.

I know it is asking alot when there are no recognizable features on it, but has anyone else ever found a coin that looked like this?

Here are two shots of one side:

Here it is compared to a regular quarter:

Try posting on the "spanish cob" forum. Those guys might be able to give you an idea. Spanish is my guess.

That coin was in a fire and the surface has bubbled up, probably a silver quarter.

Silver is always great to find!

The item had been hot enough to flash the features off of the coin. Might be more silver there from the fire.

UPDATE POST:

I examined this item with a 10x loupe today for quite some time, and I discovered some stars, as well as the outline of a neckline and chin. I believe this to be a Barber quarter that must have been in a very hot fire for a long time.

If you look at my pics, you can see the neckline / chin and a star, and possibly a number from the date in the first pic, and in the second pic you can see two more stars. These features map out perfectly to the design of the Barber quarter.
