I dug this up back when I wore a younger man's clothes (1985 or so :headbang:). Never was sure of the age, or even the nationality. :dontknow: I had one person tell me it was WWI era, but it seems a little crudely made for the 1900's. The post on the back is threaded, It's brass, and It took a lot of elbow grease to get it this clean. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You have a couple of possibilities on these.

They may be Canadian or English and should be turned the other way around.

They could be something the USMC wore because they have that basic shape.

They could have been a rank that attached to a helmet liner or a pith helmet.

In the 50's the military wore a stiff sided hat and it could have been for that but most examples I have seen are clutchback.

Post and screw attachments gave way to clutchbacks in the 40's so they are kind of a mystery.

Thanks for the reply Oldfireguy. It would be nice if I could date it by the site, but it was dug in the yard of a 1960 ranch home in southern Indiana. :icon_scratch: Not sure what was there before the current home. It was about 8 inches deep and close to the house, so who knows??? :dontknow:

I thought maybe there would be a military expert that could help out with this one. I don't get it. :icon_scratch: I post, and then I just watch it drop to the bottom, and then to page 2, and................. Do I smell funny or something. :laughing9:

Defo not english, so rules that out. good luck.

Thanks for the input, Dogman. I didn't think it was, but I thought it could be a souvenir brought back by a soldier.

Nobody knows what it is. Old screwback, WWI? Corporal, chevron? no makers mark? Just bump it back up every now and then.

the proper term for them is "chevrons" -- the screw back types are a older type style -- the modern types use sharp post and push on backing holder type arrangement

But most likely early police/fire rank pin for collar

That would be cool. I'll have to do some research down that path. I do know that in the area that this was found, there was no city police force, or fire dept. in the early days. We did have a town band that used to play on Saturday evenings up until the early 20's I believe. Maybe a possibility. Thank You!

Hey Coinmaster, I'm no military expert by no means, but a good guess from me would be it belonged on a hat of some type or a pocket or jacket flap some how, certainly to big to poke through the material, like the ones today. I'm guess it's either forign military or better yet belongs to some old police dept. maybe even Salvation Army. Not much help, but thought I would suggest a thing or two. None the less it is a nice find, good luck on it, Ken.
