I noticed that your avatar info says you're from Texas. If this was found in North East texas, the area is full of low grade iron ore. Frequently concentrations accrete and make formations like that. Is it magnetic?

How do you see if it's magnetic? with rock surrounding it I mean - do you need an instrument or just a magnet? I know, I feel stupid asking but asked anyway. Thanks for the info and yes, found in Glen Rose, Texas.

The words just popped out. Have you tried a magnet on a string, you can test weak magnetic fields that way. Also you didn't say in your post, did you find this with a detector. If not, you could try with one and find out if it is ferrous that way. It does look just like that East Texas iron ore. I used to live in Nacogdoches and the area was full of Austin stone (what it is locally called).

No, I don't have a metal detector. I just walk by the river and find things.
