copper?

Could someone please help id this? I found at what apears to be a late 1700 home sight. It is made of copper and measures about 4' long and 1' in diameter. There is a slit in it and it looks to be intensional. Any thoughts?

Guessing handle sheath for some wooden shafted item.
brush, fishing rod, parasol, knife...
I have found early battery flashlight cases with a similar 'slot' for the switch.
in other words, I don't know

Might be a part of a candle holder. I have seen some that had a thing on the side to push the candle up. DD.
