[SOLVED] Colonial Whatsit

Any ideas? I found this near a colonial homesite. It was found closest to a road on the 1789 map.

Looks like part of the finger grip of a brass candle holder.
This is just an example.

What metal are we working with here? Are those rivets holding any leather or other material?

That is copper I believe. And those are not rivets. I think the candle holder handle is right.

I dug one that is Identical to yours not 2 days ago. Mine is most definitely brass and dug near an early 19thC homesite.

Yes they are indeed rivets and the remaining bit of brass is from the candlestick base.

Apparently they all break off in the exact same manner as mine is nearly identical.
