I found this burried in a park near the road. It looks like copper maybe brass. Has the number 27319 stamoed into it. It's thin. Measures exactly 5" long x 1.5" tall. It was bent and folded up so I hammered it flat for the photo. It has 2 holes, only one is visible, Like it was nailed or riveted to something like a pole.. Any clue?? Before I toss it out.. Thanks.

If it's brass or copper, it's probably an I.D. marker of some kind. . . I've seen metal street lights with different painted numbers on each base. Could be the one you found in your park was from a wooden pole light fixture.

By the way, I would keep all the brass and copper trash you find ;D

Take care & HH!

It could have came off of anything, since the park I found it in is surrounded by everything, including a parkway, a river, a cemetery, a busy road with many poles, large apartment buildings and a nearby elevated subway line..
I know if it's copper I should hold onto it, but it would be worth more to me as an artifact than as scrap metal. So it's either gonna be treasure or trash to me...
Thanks for looking..

Thanks "TreasureTales", I think I'll go with that answer. Newer pole tags I believe contain way more than 5 digits, they include things like latitude, longitude, date and owner. They look almost like a large metal credit card. Being that this one is only 5 digits I would assume it's pretty old and the numbers kind of fit in with a military style dating system; 27 = day, 3 = month, 19 = year.. Or March 3, 1919. I hope that's the case so it would be worth saving..
