Howdy all,
I've been trying to expand my hunting area to the county West of me and have made some great connections with long standing families there. Site 1 are in the process of hanging a 200yr homestead sign, which I think is amazing. Anyhow there is an abandoned town on one of their farms that dates from 1851-1880 but it's in the woods and the growth is already too thick so that'll be a late fall hunt. To me the find of the day is the small buckle. This thing is heavy and solid, I believe it's pretty darn early. One of the nicest 2centers I've found, shield nickel is roached but I don't think it has any rays on it . The black glass is so thick that light hardly shines through, which again is pretty darn early for these parts.

Site 2 wasn't on any maps and only known by the family. It was his great grandfather's house before he built the other one. Largies all came from a 6' radius so I feel comfortable calling them a spill. I also found a 43' merc in the orchard but I left that with the owner. I'm gonna put a nice lil frame together and give it to them.

You have access to some exciting sites! What a privilege!
Thank you. I'm a field hunter and it's really surprising how many sites a person passes by and farmers farm over and not have a clue that someone use to live there. I like to stop and talk to the ol' timers about the local history and I think they like to talk about it more than most would think.

You had a really great day of digging.
The 2 cent is in great shape.
Definitely a satisfying day out playing. Congrats

Excellent group of artifacts and congrats finding a pair of sites that probably haven't been detected before! Good luck detecting the abandoned town this fall. Until then, perhaps look at some old aerial photos & maps of the area to see how large it was before the forest reclaimed it. Looking forward to a follow-up post.

All great info. The town lasted less than 30yrs and by 1881 it's gone so no photos but there's not a lot of woods so pinning it down shouldn't be real difficult. Now swinging in it is a diff story lol.

Nice digs!! That 2 cent piece is in awesome condition!!
