River's been running low. I found this in the banks on a bend at a high shoal near a sunken dock of sorts. I also found pieces of sheet copper, the largest about 4x6 inches. At first I thought it was slag or a bit of solder that was maybe used as a fishing weight but getting home and looking at it I noticed how it has a triangular cross section to it with one side being a smooth curve and the other side looking like it had been chiseled in respects. I stuck it in clay to see how a mold would look if the piece is indeed a cast object as opposed to just slag. Notice how it has a raised centerline to it with two distinct edges. The overlapping stairstepped edge seems to come from tooling the inside of the mold as opposed to a built up flow of material with lobed drops as gravity would affect the molten material if it was a run of solder. If it is a flow of metal then why does it have that nice curve to it? Also would copper be used as a solder material to begin with?
Let me know what you guys think...in the mean time I'll be looking for that face on mars.

Based on its shape, my guess is that its been hammered as opposed to being slag or cast.

As to its use, its anybodies guess.

Sort of looks like a piece of flash cut from a casting with an air chisel. To me, anyway.

bigfish31,

If you mean a rail road crossing, then yes. In fact this was dug within 50 yards of an old set of tracks over the river. Were you suggesting some sort of train-smashed penny combo? I'm still leaning toward some sort of cast object, with one end being broken off of what would of been a symmetrical banana shape at one time. I guess it will remain a mystery for now; even my brother-in-law who can't go outside without finding an arrowhead, pottery shard or stone tool is stumped on this. That guy must have eyes on his toes.
