Cool button. Civilian, I think. Looks brass to me. I'm guessing late 19th to early 20th C.

Could be brass... Just seems very light but possible.. I'll swing it under the machine again later ;)

DCMatt is right on with that analysis! :icon_thumright:

The patina and oxidation color is more consistent with brass than copper metal. Furthermore, copper being softer is rarely seen in decorative buttons. I doubt my fingers could ever feel a weight difference of copper vs. brass in a small button, nor could I rely on my detector to pick out two similar metals.

Yes good point.. Still would like to know what it is though...
