Copper ring?!

I haven't found a copper ring, but I know copper bracelets are supposed to be good for arthritis pain. Maybe this ring will heal your finger? ;) Monty

Copper used to be popular as material for rings. I also have a few rings made from square nails.

I found one too!

I found one about a month ago and posted it on here. They can have a very interesting history. Most are old and some very old.

If you post a picture some will claim it's a slice off a copper tube or automotive part of some sort.

They were real finger rings and were very popular during the Civil War period. Those who regularly hunt Civil War and Rev. War sites find them.

Great find! The old ones I would rate about in the same class as finding a seated coin.

I've found a copper ring at an old site, i thought it was just a piece of copper pipe but it had some old looking writing on the inside...

Don't clean it. If it's real corroded than just soak it in distilled water for a few months.

You don't want to ruin that patina for it in part proves the age of the ring.

Great find!

Wow, this was fascinating to read the responses. Thanks!

The area I found it in, however, dates from the mid 1970's, I believe, and it was less than an inch down, leading me to believe it was probably a recent children's ring. I'll get the macro lens out and do a close up shot for you. Right now, the old flash has dead batteries. I need to recharge them.

Yes, they do make new jewelry out of copper. But, it is possible to get very old stuff in with fill dirt. Lots of people have found coins dated 1800's in housing developments that dated back only to 1980's or so.

Some landscapers use unsifted black dirt for top soil and you never know where it came from originally. In one old town I detect, I found out why I wasn't finding anything old by the old schoolhouse. A few years ago the village wanted to level the land so they stripped off the top 4 to 12 inches of top soil and put it into some ditch so grass would grow there. I'm still looking for that ditch.

Hmm, interesting, I hadn't thought of that.

It sounds like a real bummer that they stripped off the top soil and you didn't get the chance to search the stuff. Have you hunteddown the contractor and sought records?

Not yet. I've just asked around. I've had too little time to put into this one so I've been working on other non-disturbed sites. If possible I prefer the original sites because I'm into this mainly for history. I can afford to buy all the coins and relics I want off ebay. It's not the owning as much as the finding for me.

I get this big charge out of digging something really old. I like to be the first person to touch that item since it was lost maybe 150 years ago.

I also like to buy online uncleaned ancient coins in totally encrusted condition. Then when I clean them down I'm the first to touch the surface of that coin in maybe 2000 years! It's all really cool.

Best to you.

Two copper rings I found in the woods and two brass rings from same hole on banks of Cape Fear.

I have also found a copper ring with the old german writing on it.
It is very small, and in very good condition.

I once found a copper plumbing fitting does that count?
I found what i first thought was silver, until i cleaned it, only to find out it had some silver plate on it, like clad but was really copper, was ugly but i kept it anyway- My treasure ;D

I took a pic of the ring, but then it disappeared. (The pic.) Haven't had time to re-take it. But I had no idea these copper rings were so common.

detect4food, I once found a brass toilet fitting from a urinal. lol That had me scratching my head. How'd this get to be in a baseball field?!

I found a copper ring just the other day... my wife wanted it until she saw that it turned my finger green.
