Hi all-

Have a question that perhaps some here would be able to answer. I live in Wisconsin, on a few hundred acres of land. Much of this land is undisturbed. There is a clear , cold stream that runs year round through the property. Over the years, I have picked up thousands of relics (arrowheads, axes, gorgets, pottery, etc.) as well as a few copper relics, most often washed free by the stream. I toyed with the idea of getting a metal detector a few times, and a year or so ago decided to pick one up. It's nothing fancy, from Fleet Farm for about $80. All I have ever seemed to find is old nails, pop tops, barbwire, etc. I know it's not a very good model. I know there is most likely more copper hiding on this land, as all the neighboring farms have some quite nice copper relic collections from their fields. Now, I am not made of money, but does anyone have any suggestions on a decent metal detector for a beginner looking for copper?

Thanks for reading!!

The machine you have should be able to pick up copper signals if they aren't too deep, about as deep as you are now picking up junk metals. If you want a better detector, a Tesoro Compadre runs around $160.

Agree with SusanMN, but I suggest you bury some copper at various depths to get some confidence with your existing detector. You have already realized how much metal is in the ground but keep in mind, your detector picked that up. Practice and you might be surprised and be patient.
