Howdy Folks. I recovered an interesting old piece of what I believe is copper. It has been in the dirt a long while judging by the heavy green patina on it. It measures right at 2 inches long. It looks as if it was "fashioned" to this shape and not a natural formation. Any thoughts on what this is or who may have crafted it? Thanks for your assistance.

Hmm, perhaps a plumb bob? I have seen a similar in Alaska, The Copper river there produces Monster size Copper nuggets, had some unsavories wanted me to Gold Plate 2 five gallon buckets of them, NOPE. I have seen the natives use the copper and forge it into useful items, small axes and war clubs, that small piece could be the tip of a war club?

So, I ask you if there are any Copper rivers North of you or anywhere close?? It is amazing the distance that trade goods traveled in the Old world, as Inca-Aztec items have been found in the midwest as an example.

I have found perhaps two "natural" copper nuggets in nine years. No way of confirming this as I am no expert. Just judging by their appearance. This item appears to be crafted in it's shape and form to me. The patina is also thick and brittle. It appears to have been getting tumbled in the soil a long time in this field. Perhaps further exploration may reveal similar targets? Time will tell. Thanks for chiming in.:icon_thumright:

If you found it in Illinois it could be an artifact of the ancient Michigan copper culture people? Artifacts made of the natural native copper from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan have been found all along the Mississippi River region I believe?

I want to say slugs that have been traded for by natives. there have been copper tools found on native sites in Ky. as well as pieces like this. so Ill. would be likely to.

I've found Copper Culture artifacts here in Central Illinois, but this piece doesn't looked worked to me. I've also found float copper brought down by the glaciers. To me, this looks more like float copper.

Yeah I think flinthunters right. Seems it's more copper oxide in a rock matrix than a solid piece of native copper. Never thought about glaciers moving things around. If that's what it is I'd say it's an interesting and worthwhile mineral specimen to find.
