Any help to id would be appreciated. I am sorry about the clarity of the photos. The item looks to be made of copper or brass. It has a date stamped Feb 6th 1860. I found in a farm field.

Thanks

If you use something other than a white background, your pictures will be better. Also, if you are using the Macro setting (flower icon), the plane of focus is very thin so a shot straight down will put more in focus than one from the side. A little more detail and we can probably tell you pretty quick.

Whatever it is, it is in good shape for being in the ground.

Tell us exactly what the stamped writing says.
Do you see Pat. or Patent?
Is it Feb. 6th, 1860 or is it Feb. 6, 1860?
A close up pic of the stamping would be best.

You appear to have poor lighting. Halogen or outside daylight is best.
Watch your shadows.

Thank you for the advise on picture taking. I have a lot to learn and was getting frustrated with my photos. The last picture that was lightened up shows the detail fairly well. There is a stamp above the date that show Pat. but I can not read a patent number. The item does appear to be slightly bent but not broken off. I was looking at pictures of telegraph machines. The piece looks as if it could be from a telegraph but I could not find one that looks exactly like this piece. Thank you to all that have responded and for the advise.

OK I see the P now. :icon_thumright: If you can get us that patent date, we can do a patent search. A close up of the numbers will be a big help. I searched "Feb. 6th 1860" patents but couldnt find a match.
