Hello all,

I dug this up the other day at 12+", I think it might be some sort of copper indian artifact, but I cant be sure. I tryed playing with the pics a bit, to try to bring out the full detail of the object, though they still dont show the complete detail.

It was dug in North East PA, Wilkes-Barre area.

If anyone know or has a guess at what it may be im all ears, well eyes anyway.

Thank yah, Jer

I dont think its big enough, I forgot to add its size. Its only about 2" long and at most 1" wide. Its really small.

Here we go, heres a pic that is a little better. The object is almost 2" long, the bottom side is flat.
Im not sure if it could have been used in a apothecary shop or not?

You'd have to look up the Li'l Abner comic book character to understand the reference to Schmoos. An imaginery animal to all but the world of Li'l Abner.

Thats what happens when you leave the office for 15 minutes.. Damn little troll is too inquisitive. I guess I'll have to lock him

This is more than likely what is called "float copper". Float copper came in many sizes and shapes, often times smoothed out to various sized nuggets. Float copper was a fairly valuable commodity through much of history in the Americas. It used to be thought (and still is by some) that there were two distinct time periods in Native American history that used copper, an "Old Copper Culture" and "New Copper Culture". The believed timelines on these constantly change but the old copper culture being Archaic in nature and the new copper culture being woodland in nature. That's a whole different game though... float copper can be found anywhere the previous glaciers have come down through or in the immediate outwash plains surrounding the previous glaciers. This means most of the northern states across the U.S. In my area of Wisconsin it is fairly common. Only thing that strikes me as being odd and makes me question it is the fact that if it's float copper I would expect to see more green color (copper sulfate or copper oxide) on the outside surface. Did you scrub this when you cleaned it or soak it in oil or anything? I have found float copper that was mostly brown in color before but it is much more common to find it heavily corroded. You may also want to check it closely for silver deposits as these pieces sometimes have. If it was an "artifact" or worked my human hands you would expect to find flat worked areas on the piece where as this one looks pretty rounded and smooth.......... 8)
