Counter stamps were often applied to very worn or smoothed off coppers(and silver coins) for repurposing mostly for the retail stores
There are probably more unknown than known counterstamps out there
They are a very interesting topic so many out there and an endless amount of designs
I like the one you have posted!

It is very hard to I.D. such tokens/coin(many are counterstamped on worn coin's as ironhorse stated),I myself would look at the symbol's which appear to be a cross at top, maybe a plus then a clover? or Another form of cross??(see the difficulty?) and then the R(who&what is R?) try and combine(THERE IS A "TOKENS&TAGS section to this fourm) them AFTER looking at symbol's.Most token sites have an unknown section, other could possiby I.D. this "maverick",The most difficult tokens to I.D.(mavericks)This one in my opinion will be nearly impossible to I.D.,BUT I would try,I'll look around...HAPPY HUNTING ALL:thumbsup:!!!
