I was cleaning my truck out today when I found this piece of copper again. I originally found this piece about a year ago when water levels were near a record low at Buggs Island. I'm not sure if this is an artifact or trash. It could be either, coming from where it did. The pages in the book I'm about to show contain artifacts found exactly where I found this. The kicker here is the artifacts in the book were found in context. My find was washed ashore along with tons of flakes, pot shards, modern fishing sinkers, and almost any other modern form of litter. What do you guys think? Artifact or trash?

JMO I don't think it is trash, I am not for sure what it was used for ,but I don't know of anything that rolled copper was used for in modern times:icon_scratch:

Super find I'm still looking for a copper piece ;)

Thanks fellas! I have looked high and low for split copper tubing on a piece of modern equipment. Can't find it. I have had this thing in my truck for ever. Lol!

Maybe its a cooper piece from one of your neighbors stills :tongue3: nice find

interesting post NCFH. I metal detect in mostly old homesteads. old as in 1800's and it is pretty common to find small pieces of copper all mangled and bent up. I'm always curious as to what they started life as. Although the piece you posted looks a little long for your application who the heck knows???
Your guess would carry as much weight as the next.
Good luck

bravo, do you find any copper tubing split down the center? The split in this piece is what makes me think it's possibly an artifact. The split along with where I found it. I can't think of any thing copper tubbing with a gash could be used for. It could be a ruptured line from an old radiator or something like that.

It appears to be sheet copper to me not tubing.

If you have one,I'd try to metal detect the area and see what else related to it could be found. It looks old to me.

thanks GA! I'm pretty sure Gator is correct. I think it's a rolled sheet of copper. That place had archeologist working on it every winter for about four years. They stopped lowering the water and archeologist were forced to stop early. I would love to hit the spot with a MD, but hate to press my luck!!

Looks like kettle metal? Is the cut between perfectly straight. If it is not it would be kettle metal if straight it is machined. Hard to tell from. The photos.

It is to big for a hair cone. Maybe part of a lure. ?

what is kettle metal? Is it a copper alloy? I agree what I found is big for a bead or jangler. It has a bend to it I can tell. I can't really tell if the cut is perfectly straight. The bend makes me think it may be part of a copper coil like the one that I posted from the book. I have seen one of those coils, actually, the coil in the book is the one I have seen. It is tiny and also wrapped or folded over. I'm not sure what I have. It came from the perfect location to be Native American but I have no exact context. That alone makes my piece impossible to make an absolute call on. Thanks for the input.

Kettle metal is items given to the Natives made of copper like pots and kettles. They would cut them up to make these pieces. Tinklers hair cones etc. These cuts were not so precise which should be evident when looking at the piece. Hence asking if the cuts look to perfect it would be more modern piece.

The piece is so thin and fragile I can't think of any modern function that it would be capable of carrying out. Thanks for the info!
