Dug this coin and wrote it off as another toasted large cent but looked closer when I got home and noticed it wasn't the same size as my others. This coin is about 31.5 mm in diameter and has stars around most of one side. Not much to see but here's a picture.

It looks like a well toasted Matron Head large cent to me.

Everything I see says matron head is 28-29 mm in diameter, this coin is at least 31 mm.

If it is Copper and around 31mm in diameter, then I am thinking Civil War or Hard Times Token!

Frank

Thanks Frank! I've been looking through a bunch of them but there are so many. This coin has about 14 stars visible around just over 3/4 of the outside of the coin. Could possibly be more like 15 or 16 stars covering a little more distance around the circumference.

I can't really see to tell exactly but at that size it could be a contemporary counterfeit half dollar.

There were a lot made in the pre-Civil War era. Here are some examples -

Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust Half Collectors Club

What's interesting is even though there's not much of a diagnostic for the cast ones, for an obvious reason, they seem to hold them in equally high regard, which is a surprise to me. I guess the difference is the vast number of halfpennies both cast and struck vs a much lower over all number of contemporary ctft half dollars. I bet there is many counterfeits still out there which are just looked at as low grade and not thought about much.

Edit: I guess they could also only be interested in cast copies of the rare varieties, or what's rare in cast.

I'm thinking matron head large cent. Wonder if cleaning with a toothpick will scrape away some of the crud. Congrats by the way, what a find.

Counterfeit half dollar is the closest I've seen to being a match so far, might never know for sure but definitely not ruling it out. Thanks for the input.

I just looked this coin over with Cody and I'm 95% sure he's got an 1838 counterfeit half dollar! Bramblefind hit the nail on the head! What an awesome find! Here's some pics I grabbed of it...
