Welcome to the forum! It looks like a coin for sure. Do you mean there is lettering on the edge of the coin or do you mean along the rim? If the lettering is on the edge, it may be an early large cent. It is hard to get an idea of the size of the coin from the photo.

The photo below is the edge of a large cent.

looks like I can see the faint shape of a harp. colonial era Irish copper?

The lettering appears on the face of the 'coin' vice the edge. There's definitely some vertical relief and what I can imagine into a bust or harp on that side! I've tried a pencil rubbing to pick up the details, but no luck. It's slightly smaller than a quarter in diameter and fairly thin. The button with the yellow backing shows ' orange col gilt' and '* & D' and Has a flat front. Did a quick google and I'm guessing 1800s? I actually posted the wrong picture of the crumpled piece, that's the back. The front has a wreath and stars type of design. Not sure what it is, but thought it was cool. I'll try to post a better picture. A big thanks to whomever fixed my pics as well!

Found my first silver today on the way back to the truck- 1945 nickel.

From what I can see, the edge of the coin says "HUNDRED"......is that the only lettering on the edge?

Congrats on some nice finds and welcome to the forum :)

Roland- I believe the 'hundred is a picture from someone else's find. I'd be very happy to have that much detail. Attached is a photo of the coin when wet with the text I'm trying to decode at the bottom. The other photo is the front side of the 'crumpled' piece from the original post. Thanks again for all the responses.

Sorry about that, I thought that was your coin. Your picture is very hard to see, but, I can almost see (maybe I should say imagine) 'SAINT'.
Do you have a loupe? Have you tried a soft toothbrush with a non-abrasive cleanser (soak it first).?

Looks like a KG.

Did you use water on it? :-\

Let's hope for an ID.

I did use water to remove dirt as zero detail was visible prior to that. Was that the wrong thing to do? Just measured it at a shade over 25 mm. The soil here, coastal southern Virginia, doesn't appear to be gentle to copper.

This is what I am seeing.......but, keep in mind, I'm old, ;D

Water can have a negative effect. Peroxide method and toothpick method/Dry brushing are often better in terms of results.

See the cleaning and preservation section for more details on Peroxide. (Don in SJ's post)
