I am pretty sure this is copper but what exactly was it in its day? There are no markings, only this small weld bead thing on one tiny piece. Anyone have a clue? 20131125_221156.jpg20131125_204306-1.jpg The first pic has a quarter for scale but the second close up is a dime.

Maybe a pewter plate or part of a canteen. just guessing

Hey DiggetyDog!! Interesting Piece!! I lived in Destin, Fl, some years ago and we would dig pieces that resembled yours! Actually they were copper shields they would nail to the bow and hulls of boats to protect them when in the water!! The small holes seen were nails that fasten the copper plates to the hull!! Just a thought!! GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

Copper sieve.

Can you tell us where you found it? On the beach? In the mountains? House site?

My Dad mentioned a pie safe but the diameter would be way too big. It's more rectangle than round really. I have read about the copper sheeting that was used to protect wooden hulls and it seems most logical, as I found the pieces in swampy woods of East Texas, not too far from the Gulf. Thanks guys for your input. I really didn't think it was interesting enough for anyone to even comment on but you guys got me pumped. Thanks again!
