I found this copper item in the yard of a house that dates back to 1865. I think it is some sort of brooch or a pin. I'm curious as to what was in the center before it melted. It has holes/bubbles in it, and is very hard. In some areas it has a greenish tint to it, so perhaps it was green and white at some point? (or the green came from the copper corroding) I rubbed the substance against my teeth and it is more like rock. (it is not plastic, at least none that I have ever experienced)

Does anyone know what it is? I would assume it is some sort of made made/crafted material. I'm not an expert on Cameo's, but could this have been one?

If someone could let me know what the material is, and perhaps give an estimate as to the age that would be great.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Jai

Could have been a glass cameo. Looks like the center piece of a bracelet.

you know, now that you say it, melted glass is probably exactly what it is. Though I would have thought the copper may have warped or something. There used to be a blacksmith on this property, so perhaps that had something to do with it, though I think that possibility is very slight.

So, I'll call the unknown substance as solved, some sort of white or green glass, probably a cameo.

It is about the size of a nice center part of a bracelet too. Perhaps a non-metal material was attached to the 2 circles on each side and tied to the wrist.

Anyone have an idea on the date based on the style. (what's left of the style)

It looks like it fits with the rest of your finds, except the early button.

I was talking with a friend, and we were wondering if it may not be the front of a choker, worn around the neck. Perhaps it was connected with a nice ribbon or something.

I think it's a melted cameo too, and it is definitely Victorian jewelry, whether it be a bracelet or choker. Yours looks to be the more expensive cameo, which was made of glass instead of the cheaper ones made of shell. The cameo became so popular with women of the Victorian era, cheaper ones were carved from mussel or conch shells so that all Vic. women could afford them, not just the well-to-do. Of course, if yours had been made of shell, when it was 'cooked' in the blacksmith fire, it would have been reduced to lime since melted shell (calcium carbonate) is lime (calcium oxide.) Now who needed to know all of that chemistry BS? I even bored myself.:laughing7: :laughing7: Nice finds, Breezie
