Found this in an area that used to be an Indian settlement before it became a town in the mid 1800s. The local tribe is about 8 miles away now . I contacted them , they came to look at it and said "it is interesting" but not something there tribe would have made. Plus it is too big to be used on an arrow.
Its was at about 4 inches down and i found a 1886 England penny about 30 feet away. It appears to be copper and forged, not hammered.

the design in the metal almost looks like the veins in a leaf
garden ornamental item?

Looks cast in two separate pieces. Looks like a seam runs along the edge of the entire head. I think Bradyboy might have it as being a decorative fence piece. Pretty cool either way...

A copper fence?

Maybe a garden ornamental item or wind vane. Does it look broken off on the bottom?

BigCy -Your definitely onto something there. I think the weight might come into play on this though because I'd imagine that weather vanes are fairly light ( :dontknow:).

SpoDig - how heavy is that piece? Does it look like it is two piece construction?

BigCy - I feel a bit "dorky" when I get excited about posting a link to a site for weather vanes but these thing are awesome! Check these out! http://www.ecoastweathervanes.com/boat_weathervanes.htm

Here's two that I like - the Eagle only costs two grand!!! For a weather vane!!! :o
How about the fish "chasing fish"!
My favorite - nothing says "keep off the lawn!" like a copper, double barrel shotgun weather vane! :D

Thanks to all for the replies, yes it is fairly heavy. I dint have a scale but if i had to guess i would say it weighs about the same as a 50 cent piece or just a little more. That's why the local tribe said it wasn't an arrow head because of its weight.

It does seem cast but i think it was one piece from the start not 2 halves. My thoughts are that if it was cast for a common weather vane that the details would be more symmetrical. This seems crude in detail so i was hoping for it to be older and maybe a small spear head or something. But you are probably right about the weather vane. Thanks again.

Keep in mind that I am just guessing here.

Could you explain? Did the Indian tribe say it was too heavy or too light to belong to their tribe. This is also confusing because it may belong to an ancient tribe. :icon_scratch: I dont know. Maybe you could post in the copper culture section.

Weather vane point is what I think too... I'm sure it's not from a fence, unless it's iron.

Or a sovenier type thing.

areas around the edges look the same color as a penny and it having green corrosion on it lead me to my guess
