Hi guys
I found this odd coin a while ago and have been researching it for a long time. It is the size of a dollar coin. I need some help identifying it. It rings up a solid 28 signal on the nox. It appears to be the 8 reales design But all I can find is of course the silver 8 reales. I would love some help identifying this coin.

Thanks

My guess is it is a contemporary counterfeit 8 Reales that had a thin wash of silver and over many years in the ground it flaked off. Kind of like gold gilt buttons do over time. Still a great find.

Yes! Counterfeit 8 Real. That is cooler than the actual coin in my book.

The portrait style Spanish-American eight-reales was one of the most well known, and extensively circulated silver trade coins that the world has ever seen. Produced in Spain's new world colonies from 1772 to 1825, the coin made Spain a major player on the world financial stage in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This was due in large measure to the fact this coin accounted for about sixty percent of the annual silver production worldwide. The popularity and general acceptance of this particular coin – the portrait style piece-of-eight – made it the object of forgers who operated in all areas of the globe.
