Not sure what to make of this rock. It is very brittle. Not a recent art project 🤣. Found in the surf of the Neuse River in Eastern North Carolina. Natural formed by water erosion?
Growing up and living beside the river and ocean, I’ve never seen or felt a shell anything like it. It is very rough and gritty in texture, almost like sandpaper. Is it possible to place the post also in the fossils forum?

Maybe some kind of cocoon, I've seen smaller ones like that, much smaller but built from sand like that, not sure what kind of bug makes them, but I'm pretty sure it's a water bug lol.

Very similar find - looks like the matrix is composed of shell hash or is a coquina. Therefore the rough texture,

“These cone snails, a modern shell found on Fort Morgan, and two ancient fossils found 100 miles inland on the Alabama River, appear to be closely related, and perhaps even the same species, the Florida Chinese alphabet cone snail, though separated by 40 million years.”
