This caught me off guard. 6" deep in a 60 yr old middle school yard. 1944 silver. It's a keeper!

I have never seen one of those.

That's a nice find - likely brought back by a G.I. serving in the vicinity - The Philippines were under U.S. sovereignty after the Spanish,
American War - so coinage was produced that was exchangeable for and compatible with U.S. coinage from 1903 -1945.
(* thanks to the "Red Book " of U.S. coins for the info. massively paraphrased here )

Yes, I had to read up on the info about the coin. Pretty interesting. I didn't even think about a G.I. bring it back with them.

Every time I find odd coins like that at a school yard, I think, "lost show and tell" object. I have found, Chinese, and British.

Thats a nice looking coin, when I first looked at it I was thinking WTH is that.. lol Congrats!

Nice score , bet that was a nice surprize !

Wow! Never saw one of those before! Congrats!

Those Philippine issues are great! They're probably the most overlooked of all US coinage. I've never found one in the ground, but I buy them all the time in miscellaneous foreign bins at coin shows. Fun fact: Did you know that the Manila mint was the only US branch mint outside the country?

I had no idea these even existed. Not only is detecting addicting, it's educational.
