Hey all - Found this button at a site that's produced late 18th to early 19th century artifacts and was hoping it might be military related.
Found one similar button on this web page http://www.picketpost.com/rev.htm
Its listed as a continental navy button or rhode island navy button in the rev war section of the page.

It appears to be brass, and as far as I can tell the back say's BES* & *** New York.

thanks to any and all who might be able to shed light on this little critter.

Re: continental navy button? PICS ADDED.

I cannot say at this time what the button is, but I can say there was as far as I know no backmarks on Continental Navy buttons or any Rev war buttons. Also, almost all buttons in that period were made of white metal or pewter.

Update: The button is from 1885 or later, BEST & CO, NY NY from 1885 to present.A dealer in Children's clothing, perhaps a button for a child's navy suit :) They did make one of the many variants of the NY state seal button, Albert's NY30, but that is all I found for them in button making.

Still a neat find for 1880.s button. Congrats on the find. It is neat that you have such an old area to hunt.
