continental artillery button: real of reproduction?

Believe it or not I found a stash of relics in a bag in the basement of my family's home. In it were some coins, a pocket watch, and a very old looking button. Turns out they belonged to my brother. He got the button in the 60's. At first I thought civil war. But a friend informed me it was from the 1770's. Guessing this is a reproduction. Looked up specs on some of the reproductions out there and it is a different size. About 7/8ths of an inch across. Plus it has a lot of age and wear to it.

I noticed there is a red dot on the back of it. Does that mean anything? Could use some help, anyone?
 

Due to the shank and the #4 cast into it, definitely a reproduction.
