I'm surprised at the edge loss. That's the typical condition of the Rev War buttons we find here so I have to ask... don't suppose there's a farm field or land site close it could have washed out of.

Saltwater...The spot was probably above water back when it was lost.

In the case of pewter..saltwater preserves it...is only material I have ever heard tell of that it doesn,t destroy.

I think volumes of freeze / thaw cycles are what burned up the edges....All it takes is a little water seeping in to the edges....The shank is intact which is good:

Any identifiable USA pewter is a great find. An intact shank is a bonus for sure!
