The bird gives it away, Liverbird. United Kingdom, but can't find a match.

Nice button sir. Use the metal detector and find some lotion for them hands. Too cold to have cracked hands

What I found interesting in the Hammond-Turner link was the following excerpt.
"During the American Civil War the company made some very fine buttons, although I'm sorry that they were for the southern states (the 'Confederacy'): despite my reservations, I have two examples of these highly collectable buttons in my collection."
I would gladly relieve the owner of the disgrace of owning any such buttons.
